The Coastal Edge

Sea overlays with Land

Observing the qualities and pattern language of plant communities adapted to the extreme coastal edge conditions

These dune and crevice plants form awkward shapes, tortured by extreme weather conditions as they clamber over sand dunes and granite rock, securing their place with deep roots

As the first waves, the first winds, touch down on land the waxy leaf coating with hairy (stomata) are adapted to shed the salt-spray withstand evapotranspiration

My abstract paintings magnify these adaptation characteristics, the flowers and foliage unique to coastal ecologies - The colors, textures, and inherent characteristics all with pattern language related to their survival traits

Blowing up their scale to an absurdly oversize abstraction

I have reimagined the small delicate flowers and foliage of the Coastal Ecotype - My abstract paintings boldly magnify these flowers and foliage types typical of this coast -

They are passed over, barely if at all noticed, and often stepped on

Here they are overemphasized into absurd magnified flower sizes, emphasizing ‘pattern language’ typical of this ecotype - I do wonder if you will get down on your knees to look closer at these characteristics the next time you are somewhere along the coastal land edge
